Check Your Violin Intonation and Overall Skill

Find out which notes are sharp or flat, why, and what the rest of your playing says about your level.

Violin Skill Assessor

Playing in tune on a fretless instrument is the problem every violinist lives with, and it is hard to hear your own intonation while you are busy with the bow. Record a passage and an AI model listening as a violin teacher tells you where the pitch slips: a high third finger, a shift that lands short, a double stop that beats. Intonation is only one part of the report. It also reviews bowing (pressure, speed, contact point and clean string crossings), left-hand placement and shifting, the width and evenness of your vibrato, and the tone and projection you produce. Finally it places you at beginner, intermediate, advanced or expert, gives a 0 to 100 skill score, and recommends exercises for your weakest areas.

Example result

Input

A 90-second recording of a teenage student playing the opening of a Vivaldi A minor concerto movement, first and third positions, with a practice mute off.

Output

Level: intermediate. Skill score: 61/100. Intonation: generally centered in first position. The high second finger (C natural on the A string) is often sharp, and the shift to third position at bar 9 lands about a quarter tone short before being corrected. Bowing: good full bows in the opening; string crossings in the sixteenth-note passage catch the neighboring string. Vibrato: present on long notes but narrow and a little fast; it starts only after the note has settled. Left hand: shifting is audible as a slide; lighter finger pressure during the shift would clean it up. Tone and projection: bright and clear at forte, thin at piano when the bow drifts toward the fingerboard. Practice: slow shifting with a guide finger, drone practice in A minor, and open-string crossings.

How it works

How Violin Skill Assessor works

  1. 01

Play a passage with some shifts

Log in, open the tool and record in your browser or upload a take. A scale in third position, an étude or a concerto excerpt all work. You can select the AI model.

  2. 02

    Pitch, note by note

The AI compares each stopped note with where it should sit, listening for a pattern such as consistently flat low second fingers or overshooting shifts into higher positions.

  3. 03

The bow arm and the sound

Scratchy attacks, a thin tone near the fingerboard or a crushed sound at the frog point to bow pressure, speed or contact point, and the AI names which one it hears.

  4. 04

    Vibrato, phrasing and level

It rates vibrato control and musical shaping, then combines everything into a level and skill score with practice steps for the next week.

Use cases

Who it is for

Students practicing between lessons

Catch the out-of-tune finger or short shift during the week, not at your next lesson, and bring your teacher a specific question.

Adult learners and returners

Get a realistic sense of your violin skill after years away from the instrument, and see whether intonation or bow control needs the most rebuilding.

Youth orchestra and audition prep

Check the excerpt you will play for seating or an audition, and fix the passage where tuning drifts under pressure.

Fiddlers and folk players

Hear whether your double stops ring and your drones sit in tune, even if your style uses less vibrato than a classical player.

Tips

Get better results

  • Tune your open strings carefully before recording, or every intonation note will be skewed by the tuning itself.
  • Point the phone toward the f-holes from about a meter away, and avoid holding it against your shoulder rest.
  • Record without piano accompaniment or with it very quiet, so the pitch of each note is easy to hear.
  • Include at least one shift and a few long notes, which is where intonation and vibrato show most clearly.
  • Play the same passage over a drone later in the week and compare the intonation section of the reports.

Limitations

What it can't tell you

The report is an AI estimate from the audio. It cannot see your bow hold, posture or left-hand frame, so it describes their effect on the sound rather than the cause you would see in a mirror. Room echo and a phone microphone can blur fine pitch detail. The skill level is an informal guide, not a grade from an examining board or a replacement for a teacher.

Frequently Asked Questions

Violin Skill Assessor questions

How can I check my violin intonation at home?

A tuner shows one note at a time, which slows you down. Recording a full passage and having it reviewed shows the pattern instead: which finger or position tends to be sharp or flat, and whether shifts arrive late. Pair the feedback with slow practice over a drone to fix the specific notes it names.

Why am I always out of tune in higher positions?

Notes get closer together as you move up the fingerboard, so a finger placed with first-position spacing will land sharp. Shifts that rely on the hand moving by feel alone often fall short. The assessment points out which shifts and positions drift, so you can practice them with a guide finger.

How good am I at violin?

Upload a passage that includes shifts, long notes and some faster bowing, and you receive a level from beginner to expert with a score out of 100. The level reflects the whole picture, so someone with excellent bowing but unreliable pitch may land lower than they expect.

Does the violin assessment work for viola or fiddle?

It is designed for violin, and fiddle music played on a violin is fine. The feedback on bowing, intonation and vibrato applies broadly to viola as well, but the tone comments and skill levels are calibrated to violin, so treat results for other string instruments as a rough guide.

Can it hear my bowing problems?

Many bow issues are audible: scratchy starts, a whistling or thin sound, uneven changes at the frog and tip, and noise on string crossings. The report links each sound to a likely cause, such as too little speed for the pressure used, but it cannot see your bow hold.
