AI Speech Assessment to Support SLP Planning

A structured first look at articulation, fluency, language and voice from a single recording.

Speech Therapy Analysis

A full SLP assessment takes a trained clinician, standardized tests and time with the client. This tool helps with the part that starts from a recording. Upload a speech sample and it analyzes articulation (which sounds are produced accurately and which are substituted or dropped), fluency (hesitations, rate and stuttering-like disfluencies), language development indicators such as sentence length and grammar, phonological patterns like fronting or cluster reduction, voice quality, and prosody and rhythm. It then highlights areas that may need intervention, notes progress when you compare recordings, and suggests therapy goals. It is meant to support planning by clinicians, students and families, not to replace a formal evaluation.

Example result

Input

A 3-minute recording of a 5-year-old describing a picture of a park, recorded by a parent at the kitchen table.

Output

Articulation: most consonants accurate. Consistent substitution of /w/ for /r/ ("wabbit") and an interdental lisp on /s/ and /z/. Phonological patterns: occasional cluster reduction ("top" for "stop"), typical for many children of this age; fronting is not present. Fluency: smooth overall, with a few whole-word repetitions while planning sentences, within a typical range. Language development indicators: uses sentences of five to seven words with past tense and "because" clauses. Voice quality: clear, age-appropriate pitch. Prosody: natural intonation, slightly fast when excited. Areas for possible intervention: /s/ and /z/ placement; monitor /r/, which often develops later. Suggested goals: produce /s/ in word-initial position with the tongue behind the teeth. Confirm with a speech-language pathologist before starting therapy.

How it works

How Speech Therapy Analysis works

  1. 01

    Collect a speech sample

Sign in and upload or record connected speech: picture description, retelling a story, conversation, or a word list if you are checking specific sounds.

  2. 02

    Sounds and sound patterns

The AI notes speech sounds produced in error, the kind of error (substitution, omission, distortion) and any patterns that link them, such as /k/ becoming /t/ or clusters losing a sound.

  3. 03

    Fluency, language, voice and prosody

It describes rate and disfluencies, sentence complexity and grammar, the quality of the voice, and the melody and stress of speech.

  4. 04

    Priorities and goals

The report ranks areas that may need intervention and turns them into suggested goals, with progress indicators to watch in later recordings.

Use cases

Who it is for

Speech-language pathologists

Get a quick first-pass summary of a recorded sample to save time on note-taking, then check it against your own listening and formal testing.

SLP graduate students

Practice transcribing and analyzing samples, then compare your articulation and phonological findings with a second opinion.

Parents between sessions

Record home practice and share the notes with your child's therapist, so they can hear how target sounds are going outside the clinic.

Adults working on their own speech

People practicing clearer articulation or a smoother rate after therapy can check how a recording compares with their goals.

Tips

Get better results

  • Use connected speech for the general picture and a targeted word list when you care about specific sounds.
  • Record close to the speaker in a quiet room; soft sounds like /s/, /f/ and /th/ get lost in noise.
  • Note the speaker's age and languages when you review the result, since what is typical depends on both.
  • Keep the task the same across recordings (same picture or story) so progress comparisons are fair.
  • For young children, let them play or chat naturally; a nervous child reading on cue rarely gives a representative sample.

Limitations

What it can't tell you

This is AI analysis of a recording, not a diagnosis, not a medical device and not a substitute for an evaluation by a licensed speech-language pathologist. It does not use standardized, normed tests, and it may misjudge speech from bilingual speakers, regional accents or young children whose sounds are still developing typically. It cannot assess oral-motor function, hearing or comprehension. See an SLP if a child is hard for familiar people to understand, is not reaching speech or language milestones, or has lost skills, and see a doctor promptly for any sudden change in an adult's speech, which can be a sign of a medical emergency.

Frequently Asked Questions

Speech Therapy Analysis questions

Can this replace an SLP assessment?

No. A formal assessment combines standardized tests, case history, hearing checks and observation over time. This tool analyzes one recording and gives structured notes and suggested goals that a clinician or family can use as a starting point for discussion.

Is this an articulation test?

It covers articulation, but it is not a standardized articulation test with age norms. It listens to the sounds in your sample and describes which ones are produced in error and how. For targeted checks, record a list of words that contain the sounds you care about.

Is this a speech therapy app for kids?

It is an analysis tool rather than a game or practice app. Parents and therapists use it to understand a child's speech sample and track change over time. Therapy activities themselves should come from, or be agreed with, a speech-language pathologist.

What can speech therapy AI actually hear?

From audio alone it can describe sound errors, patterns, fluency, sentence length, voice quality and intonation. It cannot see tongue or lip movement, test hearing, or judge understanding. Treat its findings as AI estimates to confirm, not as measurements.

How long should the speech sample be?

Two to five minutes of connected speech is usually enough to get a useful picture. Shorter samples may miss sounds or patterns that only appear occasionally. Include a variety of words and sentence types where you can.
