Piano Level Test from a Recording of Your Playing

An AI piano teacher listens to one piece and tells you where your playing stands.

Piano Skill Assessor

Adult beginners, returning players and self-taught pianists often have no idea which level they have reached, because the usual yardstick is an exam you may never sit. This piano level test works from a simple recording instead. An AI model listening as a piano instructor sorts your playing into beginner, intermediate, advanced or expert and gives it a skill score out of 100. Then it explains the reasoning: whether your fingers produce an even scale or a lumpy one, how accurate the notes and rhythm are, how much contrast you bring between soft and loud, whether the sustain pedal clarifies the harmony or smears it, and how musically you shape phrases. You get strengths, weaknesses tied to moments in the piece, and a practice routine.

Example result

Input

A 2-minute recording on a digital piano of an adult learner playing the first page of Beethoven's "Für Elise".

Output

Level: late beginner to early intermediate. Skill score: 52/100. Note accuracy: the opening E to D sharp motif is secure. The B section has two missed left-hand notes at the chord change. Timing: the arpeggios in the left hand speed up each time they appear, so the melody feels hurried. Technique: the right hand is even in the motif but the fourth finger is weaker on the repeated E, which comes out softer. Pedal: the sustain is held across the harmony change at the end of the A section, blurring A minor into E major. Dynamics and phrasing: mostly mezzo forte throughout; the motif would sing more with a small lift at each phrase end. Practice: left hand alone with a metronome at 60, pedal changes on the beat, and a quieter accompaniment under the melody.

How it works

How Piano Skill Assessor works

  1. 01

    Choose a representative piece

Pick something you can play without stopping: a sonatina movement, a pop arrangement, a jazz standard or an exam piece. Sign in, open the tool, then record from the browser or upload. You can select the AI model.

  2. 02

Hands and fingers, heard through sound

Uneven runs, accented thumbs and weak fourth and fifth fingers leave audible traces. The AI uses them to judge finger independence and hand position, since it cannot watch you play.

  3. 03

    Accuracy, pulse and pedal

It notes wrong or missed notes, rushed passages and uneven left-hand accompaniment, and whether pedal changes are clean at each chord or blur two harmonies together.

  4. 04

    Musicality and a verdict

It judges dynamics, voicing of the melody over the accompaniment and phrase shaping, then assigns a level, a score and targeted practice advice.

Use cases

Who it is for

Adults who started later

See whether a year of apps and videos has taken you past beginner, and which gap (usually rhythm or the left hand) is keeping you there.

Planning for a graded exam

Before booking an ABRSM, Trinity or RCM exam, get a sense of whether your pieces sound secure enough, and which elements an examiner might mark down.

Piano teachers with new students

Ask a transfer student to send a recording ahead of the first lesson, so you arrive with written notes on pedaling, evenness and reading accuracy.

Parents tracking a child's progress

Record the same recital piece every month and watch whether dynamics and timing scores climb between lessons.

Tips

Get better results

  • Place the phone on the music stand or a nearby table rather than inside an upright piano, which exaggerates the bass.
  • On a digital piano, record from the line out or headphone jack if you can, and turn off built-in reverb.
  • Play at the tempo you can manage cleanly. A slower, accurate take shows your level better than a fast, messy one.
  • Include a passage with both hands busy, since hand coordination is where many levels are decided.
  • Keep the page-turn noise and metronome clicks out of the recording.

Limitations

What it can't tell you

The AI listens only, so it infers hand posture and finger independence from their effect on the sound and cannot see tension, wrist height or fingering. A poorly tuned acoustic piano or a basic keyboard with limited touch response affects dynamics and tone scores. The level it gives is an informal estimate, not an exam grade or a qualification from any examining board.

Frequently Asked Questions

Piano Skill Assessor questions

How good am I at piano compared with exam grades?

The tool reports four broad levels rather than numbered grades. As a rough guide, its beginner range overlaps early grades, intermediate the middle grades, and advanced the upper grades and diploma preparation. The written notes on accuracy, pedaling and phrasing are more useful than the label when you are choosing what to work on.

Can it tell me my ABRSM grade?

No. It does not know exam syllabi or mark schemes, and it does not test scales, sight reading or aural skills, which are part of a real grade exam. It assesses the one performance you recorded. Use it alongside a teacher's opinion when deciding whether you are ready to enter.

Does it work with a keyboard or digital piano?

Yes. A weighted digital piano recorded directly gives very clean audio for the assessment. Unweighted keyboards with little velocity control will limit how much dynamic range you can show, so the dynamics feedback may reflect the instrument as much as your touch.

Should I play scales or a piece?

Play a piece. The assessment covers phrasing, pedal and expression, which scales cannot show. If you want feedback on pure evenness, you can run a separate recording of scales and arpeggios and compare the technique notes.

How is this piano assessment different from a teacher?

It is quick, available whenever you have finished practicing, and gives the same criteria every time, which makes progress easy to compare. A teacher, however, sees your hands, fixes posture on the spot and can demonstrate. Most players get the most from using both.
